The end of an era around our house this past month, a bit of a rough bump, a new stage and a rather sad good-bye by one two-year old girl to her beloved "chee-chee's" (pacifiers).
You might be asking yourself why was the pacifier called the chee-chee around here? I used to work with a woman who called pacifiers "noochies"- we shortened that to cheech, Emma decided on chee-chee, and the rest, as they say, is history.
The first night was a bit rough as those big, round, teary, blue eyes looked up at me and asked "where chee-chee go? Chee-chee, are you?" And I gently reminded her that they were gone, that a "new baby" needed them now. And my girl looked me right in the eye and said "no gone, you go store, buy chee-chee". And man, I had to hold myself back to not jump right into the van and go get her her hearts desire right then and there. And during the 5 hours in the car a couple of weekends ago we could've ALL used a cheech. At OMSI, a cheech would have come in handy (maybe she wouldn't have taste-tested the green-glittered play-dough with that plug stuck in her mouth, nah, this is Emma we're discussing, she would have found a way to taste it anyway.)
Now there is nothing for Emma (or me) to search for in the dark when she wakes up crying in the night and needs to be soothed.
No more constant washing of that slightly stinky, always covered with a few pieces of hair and grains of sand, rubber nuisance.
Cheech, we loved you while you were here, loved you in your many shapes, sizes, and colors. We loved you even as we cursed your name as we searched for you under beds, in the car, under couch cushions, or on the ground.
And trust me, there have been days, oh let's not kid ourselves her since we are being honest, recent moments, when I wavered in our decision to chuck the last 2 cheeches. But we are almost 3 weeks cheech free and there is no looking back.
So, before we bid ado, I give to you a cheech montage:
Good-bye cheech, we hardly knew you.
Way to go! We are SO not there yet.
